Cosmetic Dentistry: Changing the Way You Smile

It has been speculated that when you meet someone for the first time they observe your smile and teeth. Trust me no one wants to show off their crooked teeth and puffy gums. This is the reason why cosmetic dentistry has become so popular.
As a matter of fact dentistry as a procedure has moved over and above the conventional method of taking out the teeth and filling the cavities. Cosmetic dentistry has come up a long way to give patients the smile that they deserve or desire. This procedure helps in improving the appearance of teeth and is done the same way as cosmetic surgery or hair transplant. Cosmetic dentistry is used to straighten, lighten, reshape and repair teeth. The procedures which are a part of it are veneers, crowns, bridges, tooth-colored fillings, implants and tooth whitening.

A great way of treating discolored or unsightly teeth, closing gaps between front teeth, or repairing chips and cracks is dental veneers. Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain which are customized to fit the prominently visible part of teeth. Veneers can be compared to fake nails which are placed over the real nails. Cosmetic dentistry has made it possible to hide your pale yellow teeth and tooth which looks unpleasant.

To fit a veneer your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel. The thickness of the removed enamel will be as much as the veneer. Thereafter the cosmetic dentistry team will be taking impressions and will send it to the technician who will prepare the veneer. Once all this is done veneer will be bonded to the tooth which has been impacted.

The second most important and sought after procedure for cosmetic dentistry is the white dental fillings. There was time when the fillings were made out of silvery-grey material which was called as 'amalgam'. This amalgam was coined as the strongest and long-lasting material for fillings. Soon the amalgam was given away because of the potential health risks it possessed. This is why white dental fillings were introduced and soon became popular. With this new material it is easier for dentists to find the perfect match for the shade of a particular tooth. At times it becomes difficult for others to notice these fillings and this is the reason why they can be used to cover other unpleasant marks on teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry procedures just do not stop here. When your tooth is broken then you will need a crown or cap. This is done to ensure that the appearance of teeth stays the same and strength as well. While your dentist will prepare for the crown you will get a temporary crown. The temporary crown stays in place for two weeks. A crown is made out of different materials. But because it is a part of cosmetic dentistry hence the most widely used materials are porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold. Always speak with your dentist to ensure which material he is using to prepare the crown.
Dental bridges is another procedure which is associated with cosmetic dentistry. This procedure is for the people who hate and do not wish to carry dentures. Dental bridges are made by placing a crown on the teeth on either side of the gap and attaching a false tooth in the middle. The biggest disadvantage is that the bridge can't be removed.

The last and one of the most important procedures which is associated with cosmetic dentistry is tooth whitening. This procedure helps in changing the color of tooth. As we grow old our eating habits change and we start developing pale yellow teeth. This looks unpleasant and hence this procedure has come into existence. The most common form of teeth whitening is bleaching. Apart from that people who value time and do mind spending money, for them laser teeth whitening is available.

These cosmetic dentistry procedures are very common and are carried out at almost all the dental clinics. Make sure to speak with your dentist to know which procedure he advice you.
