What Should You Know About Dental Implants?

Full Dental Implants

This is a comprehensive topic and the purpose of this post is to provide general information around full dental implants and surgery. In this article, we will provide detailed information about dental implant types, implant technology, and the latest procedures.

What is a dental implant?

During a dental implant procedure, you will have a metal screw inserted into your jaw. The screw is the implant and to the implant is affixed a false tooth which to all intents and purposes functions and acts as your own tooth.

Why a dental implant?

A dental implant replaces old, defective, or damaged teeth with something that looks and feels just like your own tooth. No dentures, no bridges just something that feels entirely natural. With strength and longevity, a dental implant can be an ideal solution for many patients.

Is a dental implant right for me?

Full dental implants are not a turnkey solution for all dental needs. How effective and successful it is likely to be can only be determined by you and your family dental health surgeon, following a detailed examination. This may involve x-rays and scans. Every patient is different and the needs and requirements of each patient are individual. You can only start properly with a consultation and review.

What happens in the dental implant procedure?

1.       The damaged tooth, where necessary, is extracted.

2.       After a healing period, the gum is incised and the implant is inserted in the bone. In some instances, a bone graft may also be necessary to support the implant.

3.       In most cases, you are given a temporary cap while the bone in your jaw affixes to the implant (called Osseo-integration) and after several months, generally, the crown is fitted.

4.       Usually, there are no further adjustments needed.

Am I suitable for a dental implant?

Commonly there are three preconditions that determine the success of full dental implants treatment:

1.       The bone in your jaw must be dense enough for the implant procedure to take.

2.       You must not have active, uncontrolled periodontal disease ( gum disease.)

3.       You don’t smoke.

Otherwise, there is generally nothing to prevent any healthy adult from receiving this treatment.
